Heh. Got your attention, didn’t we?

But simmer down a minute. We’re not that kind of blog. We’re talking about sex as defined here by Merriam-Webster:

1 : either of the two major forms of individuals that occur in many species and that are distinguished respectively as female or male…

You still here? Good. Because we do have a point to make.

Yesterday, we read multiple stories about a new Rebtel study that highlights the divide between men and women on social media. To be honest… we’re not sure why it’s news.

From Mashable:

Women use social networks to connect with their friends, family and colleagues more than men, finds a new survey.

And from MediaPost:

There appears to be a new digital divide, but this one has nothing to do with socioeconomics.

For reasons that are not altogether clear, women now dominate men in their use of social media as a communication tool…

And from Andreas Bernstrom, CEO of Rebtel:

Our findings show that men tend to lag behind women when it comes to communicating with others through social media, which debunks other recent studies that suggest that men are more savvy networkers between the sexes…

Ummm…

We’re not sure which studies Mr. Bernstrom believes they have debunked. (We suppose it’s possible such studies are out there… but this is what we do – read studies and surveys and news. Every single day.) We’re also not sure why MediaPost feels there’s a “new digital divide” where “women now dominate men”.

Maybe these folks need to subscribe to our blog.

Last month, we highlighted a Pew Research study in our post “Numbers Too Big To Ignore“. (You should go read it. When you’re finished with this piece.)

Click graph to view full-sized.The study found 69% of online women using social media, as compared to 60% of online men. Women were also more likely to check in regularly, with nearly half checking in on a “typical” day.

Looking more closely at gender differences, women have been significantly more likely to use social networking sites than men since 2009.

Indeed.

So, if you read yesterday’s industry news, you may have come away thinking there’d been some unexplained shift in reality – a disturbance in the Force, if you will.

However, if you read yesterday’s blog here (And if you didn’t, go do that. Again, when you’re finished with this piece.), you would have found yet another of our posts highlighting the greater numbers of women on social media and what that means to you.

We’ve told you before…

We love to be right.

And you know what it means, don’t you?

Oh, yeah. Doin’ the happy dance.
